Dear IOHA Supporter:

The International Oral History Association seeks your support to advance and promote the work of oral history, worldwide.

The XVth International Conference will be held at the University of Guadalajara, Mexico, from September 23-26, 2008. The conference is sponsored by the Mexican Oral History Association (AMHO), the University of Guadalajara, the Instituto Mora, the University of Guanajuato, and the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).

We anticipate that the conference will be large, and that at least half the participants will be from Latin America, where oral history is experiencing an unprecedented boom. In Guadalajara we will continue and expand two new opportunities initiated in Sydney, 2006. The pre-conference Master Classes will run for two days and in two languages – English and Spanish! And, we will continue holding Special Interest Group meetings.

In order to better serve our growing constituencies, the Guadalajara conference has two pressing program needs that exceed the means of the IOHA budget:

  1. Scholarship Fund: Since Rome, 2004, the Scholarship Fund has enabled the participation scholars and practitioners who, despite their records of achievement in the field, cannot afford to bear the cost of sharing their work in an international venue. Since 2004, we have funded more than two dozen scholars from Africa, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Oceania. Your generosity enables us to continue this important effort.
  2. Bilingual Translation and Interpretation: We anticipate that more than half of the conference papers in Guadalajara to be delivered in Spanish. In order to enhance communication of ideas across linguistic and cultural boundaries, IOHA needs your financial assistance to produce the bilingual Book of Abstracts and expand simultaneous translation to more than plenary sessions.

Your support, however modest, will make a crucial difference to enhancing opportunities for scholarly exchange, international collaboration and increased communication at the biennial conference.

We look forward to your contribution and continued commitment to international oral history!

Dr. Alistair Thomson, President
